How to Know If I Should Get a Ceramic Coating?
Exploring the Pros and Cons of Ceramic Coatings for Your Vehicle
“Yea my buddy just got a ceramic coating on his car. It’s bulletproof and he never has to wash it. It’s pretty sick.”
Before you run off to get a ceramic coating, read this first.
What is a Ceramic Coating?
Ceramic coating is a liquid polymer applied by hand to the exterior of a vehicle. Once applied, it chemically bonds with the vehicle's factory paint, creating a protective layer that enhances the paint's durability and appearance.
Pros
Protection
Ceramic coatings create a barrier against environmental contaminants, UV rays, bird droppings, and other harmful substances, reducing the risk of paint damage.
Aesthetics
By enhancing the paint's depth and clarity, ceramic coatings give your vehicle a glossy, showroom-like finish that lasts for years.
Easy Maintenance
The hydrophobic properties of ceramic coatings repel water and dirt, making it easier to clean your vehicle and maintain its appearance.
Cons
It costs…a lot
Ceramic coatings can be expensive, particularly when compared to traditional wax or sealant products. For a certified professional to properly prepare your vehicle and apply a real ceramic coating you can expect to pay anywhere from $500-$2000 depending on the size and condition of your vehicle and the specific product you choose to have applied.
It’s not invincible
While ceramic coatings provide a layer of protection, they do not protect your finish like PPF (paint protection film) in preventing scratches, chips, and other physical damage. It is not an invincible shield.
You still have to wash your car…but better
No more automatic carwashes! To get the most out of your ceramic coating, you'll need to clean your car by hand using proper methods, tools, and products. For most car owners, this will require education, purchasing tools and products, and investing time and effort into cleaning their vehicle regularly.
So, should you get a ceramic coating?
If you have:
A large budget for car care
Very high standards for your cars finish
Time, knowledge, and passion for proper maintenance
Then yes!
The Detail Buff Recommendation:
Ceramic coatings are not worth it for most vehicle owners.
Instead, I recommend adhering to a regular maintenance routine that includes:
Washing your car regularly with safe methods
Applying a high quality wax or sealant
Parking in a garage to protect from environmental elements
Scheduling bi-annual detailing sessions
Polishing any paint imperfections when necessary.
This approach not only provides adequate protection and maintenance for your vehicle but also offers a more cost-effective and practical solution for long-term care.
